Sheridan VAMC Mental Health Treatment Facility

This fully-designed rehabilitation center houses a 40-bed inpatient program. The VA mission-critical facility designation required design enhancements including ballistic resistance, modifications to standard mechanical, electrical, and structural considerations, and special site adaption requirements. The facility design is patient-centered, providing a secure inpatient residential environment for men and women.

The VAV/reheat HVAC system was designed to exceed ASHRAE 990.1 – 2004 by 27%. Condensing boilers were designed as the main heating source. Air-to-air energy recovery was utilized to process all exhaust air streams. Air side economizer operation was maintained and bypassed the air-to-air energy recovery. An air flow polling control scenario was used to minimize fan energy consumed by supply fans. Rejected heat from the air-cooled chiller was transferred to heat domestic water.

Three wings emanate from a center core that accommodates a large day room, coordinating kitchen, staff spaces, and a large open nursing space. The nursing space has direct visibility to all patient wings and activity areas. The space was designed for comfortable interaction with patients without compromising privacy. One wing serves female residents in a secure atmosphere that includes a dayroom, lounge and laundry. Bedrooms focus on the resident’s comfort, and allow for specialized care such as bariatric and disabled. Multiple activity spaces appeal to a wide range of patient interests.

In addition to the inpatient spaces, an administrative core helps provide a direct and positive impact on the residents. The offices used by clinical professions aid in the healing environment. The interior provides a warm, welcoming, and positive impression. The use of relaxing colors and finishes help to promote the residents rehabilitation and recovery. Corridor ceilings are vaulted and feature specialty lighting to provide a sense of space and volume.

Landscape improvements were also designed for this project. Topsoil, irrigation systems, vegetation, and other items were added, relocated, and replaced. The landscaping adjacent to the curb and gutter and other areas were graded to allow infiltration and promote flow.
