Swander’s Historic Grocery Renovation

to FourFront Design Headquarters

When FourFront Design’s former Principal Architect Fred Thurston, an avid preservationist, saved this dilapidated downtown historic property from the wrecking ball, his primary aims were to preserve a part of the past, and breathe new life into an aged gem.

Today, the building houses the offices of FourFront Design, Inc., in a modern, up-to-date facility that embodies historic preservation, meets all applicable codes and ordinances, and is a LEED Silver Certified project.

Sustainable design is important to FourFront Design, Inc. In fact, the firm was the first professional design firm in the region, including the states of South Dakota, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana, to become a member of the United States Green Building Council. The USGBC is the originator of the LEED rating system.

When historic preservation meets modern-day codes and sustainable design intentions, many opposing pressures are exerted on a project. This project is a superb example of FourFront Design’s abilities and experience with incorporating modern life safety, ADA building codes, and applicable statutes into the renovation of historic facilities.
