Fort Meade VAMC Surgical Tower Addition

This project is a new 32,000 SF, two-story addition which appends the existing medical center complex providing enhanced surgical space. The new upper floor provides a new surgery department with accessory spaces including pre-op/post-op, PACU and surgery administration.

The existing suite, located adjacent to the new addition, is remodeled to incorporate a relocated I.C.U. department, family waiting and renovated endoscopy department. The relationship between spaces was analyzed in order to provide proper traffic patterns within the surgical suite, sterile field and internal operation room circulation. The new first floor provides space for the enlarged SPD and logistic departments. The basement was also expanded for warehouse use.

Besides providing new and renovated spaces, the master plan examined the services provided. This included the interaction between the patient’s mental state prior to surgery, and how the architecture could aid in reducing anxiety. The goal being to provide a building that will help instill a sense of calm and control to the patients and family alike.

On-going operations during construction were a key concern of the owner and user groups. In response, a construction phasing plan was implemented to maintain operations while working on the addition and updates.
